Brooklyn Nets rookie guard Mikel Brown Jr. is generating early buzz as a potential steal from the 2026 NBA Draft. The No. 6 overall pick received votes for being the biggest draft steal in the league's annual general manager survey.
Brown made his delayed preseason debut after recovering from a left ankle sprain. His performance, even on a minutes restriction, has given Nets fans a glimpse of his potential as the team prepares for the regular season opener.
Brown's first NBA action came in the Nets' final preseason game, a 144-128 loss to the Miami Heat on October 14, 2026. He was limited to just over 18 minutes of play but made them count. The 20-year-old guard finished with 15 points, three rebounds, and two steals.
That outing capped a 2-2 preseason for Brooklyn. Their other results included a 122-131 loss to the Washington Wizards on October 12, a 114-108 win over the Philadelphia 76ers on October 8, and a dominant 124-90 victory against the Charlotte Hornets on October 6.
"Just continuing to be myself," Brown said after a recent practice. "I know how much work I put in, I know the effort that I put into it."
Selecting Brown with the sixth pick raised some eyebrows around the league. Some analysts believed the Nets should have taken Arkansas guard Darius Acuff Jr., who went to the Sacramento Kings. The GM survey votes and Brown's efficient debut offer early validation for Brooklyn's front office.
His college stats at Louisville were solid. In the 2025-26 season, he averaged 18.2 points, 4.7 assists, and 3.3 rebounds per game. He shot 41.0% from the field and 34.4% from three-point range. The Nets are betting on that scoring and playmaking ability to translate.
Brown's ankle rehab remains a daily process. How much he can contribute early in his rookie season will depend on his health. But his mindset is clear. "I just put it in God's hand," Brown said. "Whatever happens, happens."
The immediate focus is the regular season opener. The Brooklyn Nets will host the Charlotte Hornets at home on October 21, 2026. It's a chance to build on their preseason win against the same opponent and start the campaign strong.
For Mikel Brown Jr., the goal is to earn consistent minutes and prove the draft-night critics wrong. His ability to score, create for others, and get steals fits the modern NBA game. The preseason was a promising first step.
Brooklyn's coaching staff will manage his workload carefully. Integrating a young guard while competing in the Eastern Conference is a challenge. But the early returns suggest the Nets may have found a key piece for their backcourt future. His development is one of the most interesting stories to follow this season.
