Brooklyn Nets center Day'Ron Sharpe has been left off a prominent list of the NBA's top 27 centers for the upcoming 2026-27 season. This omission comes as the 24-year-old is set to be the team's starting center for the first time in his career following the trade of Nic Claxton. The Nets are looking to rebound from a tough stretch, having lost their last two games, including a 125-108 defeat to the Milwaukee Bucks on April 11.
Sharpe did not appear in the top 27 rankings, nor was he mentioned among players who just missed the cut. That group included established names like Deandre Ayton, Nikola Vucevic, and Mark Williams. For a player stepping into a starting role, this external evaluation highlights the perception gap he must close. Sharpe is coming off a 2025-26 season where he averaged 8.7 points and 6.7 rebounds per game while shooting 60.1% from the field. His role was primarily as Claxton's backup, appearing in 62 games with just seven starts.
His performance in those limited starting opportunities, however, suggests potential. In those seven starts last year, Sharpe's numbers jumped to 11.1 points, 7.9 rebounds, and 3.6 assists per contest. His best single-game performance actually came off the bench-a 19-point, 14-rebound effort in a loss to the Los Angeles Lakers last February. Head coach Jordi Fernandez is expected to name Sharpe the opening night starter, and the young center has stated he's prepared to give his best regardless of external rankings.
Sharpe's path to the starting lineup was cleared by a significant trade. Brooklyn sent center Nic Claxton to the Chicago Bulls in exchange for forward Julius Randle. This move reshaped the frontcourt and handed the keys to the paint to Sharpe. The trade indicates the organization's belief in his development, making the external ranking snub a notable point of contrast. The team's recent form has been challenging, with a record of 1 win and 4 losses in their last five outings (LLWLL).
Their recent results include a 94-123 loss to the Indiana Pacers on April 9 and a 96-90 win over the Milwaukee Bucks on April 7.
The upcoming season represents a major opportunity for Day'Ron Sharpe to define his NBA career. Being overlooked in a top-31 center discussion (including the 'just missed' group) provides clear motivation. His success is directly tied to Brooklyn's ability to improve its interior presence and overall defense. The Nets will need him to consistently deliver the production he showed in his spot starts last year.
For the Nets, integrating Sharpe as a full-time starter alongside new addition Julius Randle will be a key storyline. The team's late-season struggles, including heavy losses to Charlotte and Detroit in March, show the need for improved consistency. Sharpe's response to this early-season slight will be one of the more intriguing subplots for Brooklyn as they aim to climb the standings. His development from a reliable backup to a legitimate starting NBA center is now the expectation, not only a possibility.
